The Jungle is Dark But Full of Diamonds: Prepping a Pulp Jungle Hexcrawl #5

I posted my minimalist hex crawl map from my previous blog post to r/osr in Reddit and got some positive feedback: big thank you to everyone who took the time to comment and offer their insight!

One person suggested to add color. I thought that was a good idea, so I whipped off these colorized versions as well.

I think I like the middle one the best, with solid color hexes and no ocean indicated, but I'm not sure. Let me know what you think in the comments! I'd be super glad to hear any feedback anyone has.

Part of me still likes the old black and white version, too. Decisions, decisions!

Your icons look fantastic! The color version is striking, but I see what you mean with the B&W.

I think what leaps out for improvement to me, is they seem a bit orderly. The colors a bit bold/consistent, the borders the same. Specifically, I think they draw the eye a bit much.

For the B&W version: the icons look great, I'd say keep 'em. But maybe making the borders grey, or hand drawn, or doing away with them but making the hexes alternativing colors of grey.

For the color: it does grab the eye, so the borders may work. Though, making their color based off the hex color might look nice. But, maybe filling in the colors imperfectly by "hand" in an art program, desaturating them, filling them in with patterns (dots, stripes, etc), might be worth looking at.

Keep up the good work ^_^

    2. Ooh, third idea: no borders, alternating solid grey hexes, color icons.

    3. Thanks so much for this feedback! I understand what you're seeing I think and agree with what you've shared. I especially like the idea of 'roughing up' the image a bit and adding some natural touches like a watercolor effect to the colored tiles or something. It'll give me the chance to learn how to do something new.

I'm out of town right now, but once I'm back in touch with my better laptop I'll try out some of the options you suggest!
